Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Inc. New York, USA

Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Einstein) is one of the nation’s premier institutions for medical education, basic research and clinical investigation. Einstein is located in the Bronx, the northernmost of the five boroughs of New York City. Einstein is home to roughly 2,000 faculty members, 750 M.D. students, 350 Ph.D. students, and 380 postdoctoral scholars. Einstein was founded in 1953 and has continued to expand since that time; it has historically been known for its strength in the basic sciences but today is now expanding rapidly into areas of translational research, bioinformatics, diabetes, public health, women’s health, bioethics, and cancer. Einstein supports a broad array of shared scientific facilities and cores (including sequencing facilities) designed to advance the research efforts of Einstein investigators. Those that apply specifically to this application are described below. In addition to the Albert Einstein Cancer Center (described below), Einstein also houses NIH-designated centers including the Bronx Center to Reduce and Eliminate Ethnic and Racial Health Disparities, Diabetes Research Center, and Hispanic Center of Excellence. Einstein is also making major investments in cutting-edge “omics” technologies and is expanding its campus, recruiting faculty, and is branching out into international health. Einstein has a large medical library located in an adjacent building in the medical school complex. Many journals are also accessible for faculty members through the internet on individual personal computers under Einstein contracts.
